Dental Implants vs Dentures
Implants vs. Dentures
Many patients who initially opted for removable dentures have switched to dental implants with positive results. Implants feel and respond like natural teeth, allowing for more natural eating and eliminating embarrassing moments when dentures may have slipped or clicked.

Dental Implants Vs Dentures

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots made titanium. A metal, screw like post is placed into the jaw and allowed to fuse naturally with the bone. Once the metal and bone have fused together, a small abutment is put in place and then covered with a dental crown. Dental implants are meant for people who have or more missing teeth due to injury or disease.

Dental implants are made of three separate pieces. There is the titanium implant, the abutment, and the crown. First, the dental implants are surgically placed within the jawbone. Once the implants have been given enough time to fuse with the bone, the abutments will be placed over the titanium posts. The final step is to place a crown over the abutment to mimic the appearance the missing teeth.

Dental implants posses several advantages over traditional dentures:

  • They are made from titanium. Titanium is naturally compatible with the body and is able to fuse with the jawbone.
  • Increased stability. Dental implants mimic the roots of the missing teeth. This allows them to fit more securely in the jaw and function similarly to natural teeth.
  • They can replace any number of missing teeth. Whereas dentures can only replace all or several missing teeth, dental implants can replace a single tooth.
  • They do not need to be replaced. Dentures typically need to be replaced every 5 years or so. With proper care, however, dental implants can last a lifetime.
  • They stimulate bone growth. Because dental implants stimulate the jaw bone as natural teeth would, they are able to preserve it and prevent deterioration.
There are few restrictions limiting who can and cannot be a candidate for dental implants. Patients with gum disease may need to undergo treatment before they can receive dental implants. There must also be enough bone tissue present for the implant to be put in place. In cases where a significant amount of deterioration has taken place, bone grafting procedures can be performed.
