Gum Disease Impacts Your Heart Health

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not."

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

Basic Steps of Lanap

LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a less invasive alternative to traditional gum disease treatment. With LANAP® a dentist for gum disease can operate on a patient’s gums without having to cut away healthy tissue. Instead, a laser is used to remove bacteria and diseased tissue from the area.

There are 6 basic steps to LANAP® gum disease treatment:
  • First the depth of the periodontal pockets are measured with a probe. This tells the dentist for gum disease how deep the pockets are and much tissue has become detached.
  • Then a small fiber is placed between the gum and tooth. A pulsed laser light is then used to remove any bacteria from the area.
  • Scalers are then used to remove deposits of calculus from underneath the gum line.
  • Next, the dentist for gum disease will use the laser again at the bottom of the pocket to stimulate soft tissue, root, and bone. This also causes the blood to clot and form a tight seal around the tooth.
  • Tissue is then recompressed against the surface of the teeth. No stitching is required.
  • Finally your dentist for gum disease will adjust your bite to make sure no considerable trauma has been done.

LANAP® gum disease treatment has several advantages to traditional gum disease treatment. Because there is no cutting and stitching involved, patients experience less pain and discomfort during the procedure. This means that there is rarely a need for pain medication and patients can continue with their daily routine immediately after the procedure LANAP® also gives patients a faster healing time so there is less risk of infection.
